Puthandu: Welcoming the Tamil New Year with Hope and Tradition
Share
Puthandu, also known as Tamil New Year, is celebrated with joy and spiritual fervor by Tamils across the world. Observed on the first day of the Tamil month Chithirai (usually on April 14th), it marks the beginning of a new year filled with hope, prosperity, and renewal.
The day begins with Kanni—a traditional arrangement of auspicious items like fruits, flowers, a mirror, betel leaves, and coins—viewed first thing in the morning to bring good luck. Homes are cleaned and decorated with kolams (rangoli), and people wear new clothes, visit temples, and exchange greetings of "Puthandu Vazthukal" (New Year wishes).
A special meal is prepared, often featuring Mangai Pachadi, a dish that blends sweet, sour, and bitter flavors, symbolizing the varied experiences of life. Family gatherings, cultural performances, and community prayers further enrich the celebrations.
This blog dives into the significance, customs, and evolving traditions of Puthandu, capturing the spirit of new beginnings and cultural pride.
